Online Schools Help Adults Make Midlife Career Changes

Changing your career midlife can feel daunting. Living in the age of automation forces people to reskill and retrain, resulting in significant career changes. In fact, according to a McKinsey Global Institute report, approximately 14 percent of the global workforce may need to alter their occupation as automation and digitization transforms careers.

To support these transitions, online schools provide a pathway for adults to change and develop new careers.

Midlife Career Change Benefits

Experts agree that most people who change their careers midlife have success. According to another report published by the American Institute for Economic Research, 82 percent of people 47 and older who tried to transition into a new career were successful.

In summary:

  • Nearly 70 percent of those who successfully transitioned into a new career kept the same salary (18 percent) or enjoyed an increase in pay (50 percent).
  • 87 percent of successful career changers were happy that they changed careers.
  • 65 percent experienced less stress at work following their midlife career change.

Many of the individuals surveyed stated that having transferable skills was an important element, along with developing a clear plan, which often included additional education. In addition, the number of people 55 and older working continues to grow. In total, this age group makes up more than 40 percent of the labor force, in comparison to just 29 percent in 1993.

The Positive Impact of Online Schools

Although they are still held to a high standard, online school programs are often completed much more quickly than traditional college courses. They are also more accessible and often more career-focused. In many cases, adult students can complete courses in the evening or on weekends, allowing them to continue working as they transition into their new career.

This level of flexibility makes career changes less stressful and more rewarding. Some of the other core benefits of online schooling include:

  • Being highly effective, as adult students are able to access state-of-the-art online learning platforms and opportunities. With so many degrees to choose from, it is also easier than ever to transition from one career to another. When guided via online courses, adult students gain confidence as they develop new skills.
  • Offering skill training that is cost-effective, as you do not need to pay for many of the expenses associated with traditional face-to-face classrooms, such as housing, transportation and other fees. In many cases, students can continue to work as they retrain and re-skill, reducing some of the financial pressure.
  • The convenience of being able to train whenever, wherever. When you can study in your own time, in the comfort of your home, it makes the learning experience much more enjoyable. Students can learn at their own pace and seek additional courses that support their future goals.
