Future You University (Future You U) is an event designed to introduce University life experiences to female middle school STEM students.   To be chosen to participate, these girls had to be active in a STEM group, be recommended by their STEM Program champion and principal, desire a STEM related career, and write an essay on why they should be considered. The event takes place over a long weekend at the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe. The UAT Student Innovation Project (SIP) Fair was held April 20, showcasing over 20 innovative projects by many graduating students. This semester, the program was enhanced a bit to provide a unique experience for all UAT students and employees. The presentations were broken into five segments allowing each group time to play the project overview video, present the project and answer questions in the theater followed up by demos and further Q&A’s from judges, staff, professors and fellow students in the commons area. High school student Kristy Taing, who attends BASIS Chandler, is conducting her senior research project at UAT to study anxiety levels in college students. In working with UAT Game Studios Program Champion Derric Clark and game design students, Kristy has created a study that measures a students stress level before and after playing a short, relaxing VR game on the HTC Vive for a period of five minutes. As an artist, Terrence made it his own with the secret theme of “trigger words and safe spaces” to allow students to unleash their creativity and develop some pretty interesting indie games. UAT’s League of Legends eSports team That’s Suboptimal had a BYE last weekend due to their top performance. Currently Team That’s Suboptimal is ranked in the Top 16 teams in the West and will play in the Round of 16 on March 4, against University of Southern California USC A. If they win on March 4, they will enter the Regional Quarter Finals or the Top 8 on March 11. Teams that make it to that stage will earn a $1,000 scholarship per player.
