New Pew Research on Mobile Phone Problems

The Future of Big Data

The Pew Internet & American Life Center has published a new study on problems faced by cell phone users. Highlights of their findings include the following:

  • 88% of American adults are cell phone owners.
  • 69% of users who text report that they receive unwanted spam and texts “at least weekly.”
  • 72% of users experience dropped calls occasionally, with 32% reporting that this happens “at least a few times a week or more frequently than that.”
  • Smartphone owners report higher incidence of all of the above.

In a report out last month on “The Future of Big Data,” Pew reported that “Tech experts believe the vast quantities of data that humans and machines will be creating by the year 2020 could enhance productivity, improve organizational transparency, and expand the frontier of the ‘knowable future.’

But they worry about ‘humanity’s dashboard’ being in government and corporate hands and they are anxious about people’s ability to analyze it wisely.”
