Give Students Technology and They Will Innovate

VR demo with Tempe's Mayor Mark Mitchell

Put technology in the hands of UAT students Kenny Vorseth and Ryan McDonald and watch their ideas unfold as they create new ways to use tech devices. Last year, the two-student team developed a cost-effective Head Mounted Display for Virtual Reality, using a 3d printer and materials at UAT. The goal of the project was to create an innovation but also to build a device that actually worked. The long term goal is to decrease the cost by using lower resolution screen. This project wowed professors so much that Kenny and Ryan were asked to show off their innovation at…

‘Props Through 3D Printing’ Panel at WonderCon featuring 3D Printed Starlord Mask

Maker Technician Mike Syfritt in the UAT Maker Lab

UAT Maker Lab Technician Mike Syfritt is headed to WonderCon to host a panel called “Props Through 3D Printing,” on April 1, at Anaheim Convention Center, a topic which stems from his career as a custom prop fabricator. At WonderCon, he will show off one of the largest 3d print jobs that UAT has seen on campus, a Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy Starlord Mask which was created on a Zortrax M 300 and took over 40 hours to complete. The panel will talk about how to get started building props using 3d printing technology along with information about printers…

The Process of Prototyping

How to Prototype in the Maker Lab

As a professional prop maker, UAT Maker Lab Tech Mike Syfritt knows his stuff when it comes to Digital Fabrication. Students can sign up for a demonstration to learn how to use the vacuum former, 3d printers, laser etcher and more. Mike is a helpful resource to students who want to bring their maker projects to life. He creates tutorials on how to get started including the process of how to prototype a part. First Mike modeled out the mold box using a 3D model of the part. Then he 3D printed the boxes on the Form1+ Printer from Formlabs using the…

Students Display Innovative Problem Solving in “Thinking Strategies” Class

Innovational Challenge

Digital Maker and Fabrication (DMF) Professor Spencer Nelson gave his Thinking Strategies class a challenging assignment. They were asked to design a device or method to be able to “tie” tennis shoe laces with one hand. The device was judged on speed and ease of use. The tie did not have to be a traditional knot, but it had to get the laces out of the way. There are many reasons why a person may only have the use of one hand to tie their shoes so this is a real problem that millions of people face every day. Each team creatively…

New NT Lab Equipment

New Technology Lab

Have you been inside the New Technology Lab (NT Lab) lately? There are some new devices for UAT’s population of tech savvy individuals to use on campus. Stop in to the Bindery for a key to the NT Lab and get your innovative juices flowing with new technology! Kor-FX Gaming Vest: The Kor-FX is a haptic feedback vest that lets you feel the game you are playing or developing. As part of the Virtual Reality Station, students will be able to combine the vest with the Oculus Rift to create truly immersive experiences. Sphero: Sphero, an addition to the Mobile…

Build a 3D Printer With a 3D Printer

Next Fab

Want to learn to build your own 3D printer with a 3D printer? NextFab Studio has started training sessions on how to build your own “MendelMax 1.5” 3D printer out of plastic, using a “RepRap” 3D printer that is essentially also made out of plastic. The $2,000 weekend class includes your own printer, which is about the price of a RepRap 3D printer, as well as, the 3D modeling software MOI v2. To build a 3D printer of your own you’ll need a laptop (recommended Mac OS X 10.6+ and Ubuntu 11.04+), Python v2.7+, the Arduino environment, and a few…
